The European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation (ACES Europe) has named Guimarães , Portugal as the European City of Sport for 2013.
Following the resounding success of Guimarães ‘ European Capital of Culture 2012, the city has now received an equally important title, this time for its sporting facilities. Guimarães will play host to major sporting events on a national, European and worldwide scale in 2013.
It will host the National Festival of Gymnastics from the 8th-10th June and the European Championships of Boccia from the 15th-23rd June. The 10th Games of the “Eixo Atlântico”, a popular tournament in which cities from Spain and Northern Portugal compete in a number of different sporting events, will take place from 30th June to 4th July.
Other competitions are also scheduled to take place including swimming, synchronised swimming, athletics, figure skating, horse riding, hockey, handball, football, cycling, karate and judo.
With over 50 different sporting events planned over the course of the year, more than 20 thousand athletes will pass through the city of Guimarães in 2013. Nine federations, 17 regional associations, 40 clubs and six universities will be taking part.
The executive committee of Guimarães 2013 European City of Sport aims to promote the city as a sporting destination in 2013 whilst raising the profile of the cultural and social elements of the city at the same time.
