CLIMATLANTIC aims at developing strategies at regional and local level towards the reduction of the carbon footprint in the European Atlantico Area. The project will focus in four essential issues: mobility, energy, territorial management and social behaviour; developing concrete strategies to be validated through pilot actions. As a final product, partners will create a common strategy for the Atlantic Area, based on the four thematic strategies.
The Climatlantic project, regional and local actions to reduce carbon emissions in the Atlantic Arc, is running until 2012 under the auspices of the Eixo Atlántico (Spain- Portugal) together with a further six partners (Spain, Portugal, Ireland, UK, France). It seeks two objectives: firstly, to draw up a long-term strategy to combat climate change within the Atlantic Arc, and secondly, to present and focus this strategy locally on four fundamental points: the organization of mobility, awareness of behavioural adjustments, energy management and town planning. This approach will be adapted to the five types of regions identified in the Atlantic Arc (from urban to rural areas).
After a presentation on progress during the General Assembly of the CAAC on 30 June 30 2011 in Niort, the partners are drawing up a comprehensive strategic document before the end of 2011, based on consultations with communities and university students. The partners will then launch pilot actions until March 2012 and afterwards present and disseminate the strategic document on the Atlantic Arc in April 2012, during the final meeting in Ourense.

SPAA (Sustainable Promotion of the Atlantic Area) was a project supported by the European Regional Development Fund (INTERREG IIIB) seeking to promote the economic development of European towns and cities by testing the impact of an integrated marketing approach based on their local distinctiveness.  Chester was a lead partner on the project, which was conceived by Chester City Centre Management. This catalyst enabled considerable growth in the resources applied to annual tactical marketing campaigns across a range of sectors. Between 2005 and 2008, the SPAA project aimed to take into account the economic disadvantages of peripheral regions of the Atlantic area and to study how an integrated promotion system could help to overcome regional imbalances of these areas. This systematic review of promotion strategies for the approximation of regions sought to strengthen the identity of the Atlantic area.
The aim of the European Union Sustainable Promotion of Atlantic Area (SPAA) programme was to improve sustainable economic development opportunities for areas on Europe’s Atlantic fringe. A practical guide was required by four European city partners working in the relatively new field of place-making under the SPAA programme. Its aim was to advise European Atlantic cities and regions – members of the Conference of Atlantic Arc Cities – how to improve their economic competitiveness through an integrated place-making strategy.
