Gijón is a tourist destination with a difference, an old industrial port on the northern Spanish coast that has managed to put itself on the map thanks largely to a zany crime-writing festival. Ferris wheels loom over the Semana Negra (Noir Week), which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year and draws a million visitors with its blend of funfair and litfest.

The best thing about the fair is that visitors, candy floss in hand, can rub shoulders with the likes of Oscar-winning Antonio Skármeta, the Chilean author of The Postman. Unlike highbrow festivals, entrance is free to all the events, including 120 crime, thriller, sci-fi, fantasy and mainstream writers.

Introduction to Guimarães

Guimaraes Castle

“Aqui Nasceu Portugal”. These words adorn the walls of Guimarães Castle, and translate as “Portugal was Born Here.” No idle claim – the Portuguese national identity was truly born in Guimarães, as was the country’s first King. Its contributions to Portugal include language, building techniques, culture and government.

Guimarães Castle was erected in the 10th Century to protect the settlement and monastery from attack. It became the royal residence for the emerging Portugal’s first Royal Family, and was soon at the heart of the young country’s capital. It stands to this day, having narrowly avoided being torn down in the 19th century and used as building material for the expanding town.

Guimarães, cidade berço, Cidade Europeia do Desporto 2013.
